Nominations are now closed. We have resolved outstanding queries in the manner in which we stated we would and are in the process of resolving queries that people have responded to. Additionally:
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses - absent a response to our query about the "F!Lysithea" nom we've just put both Lysithea/F!Balthus and M!Lysithea/F!Balthus in the tagset.

  • Similarly, for Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword we've added both options for the "F!Lyn" tag.

  • Granblue Fantasy - We've declined the nomination of "F!Gran" as F!Gran appears to be the equally prominent canonical character Djeeta. - Per the comments below, we are adding F!Gran to the tagset, but request that participants only use this tag for art requests/offers as a fic about F!Gran would functionally be a story about Djeeta.

  • X-Men (Comicsverse) has been merged into Marvel 616.

Please let us know if you see any other issues in the tagset or have any other questions. We expect signups to open on time or early!

  • Beauty and the Beast (2017) - Original characters are not allowed in this exchange. You may nominate a genderswapped character "& None" and put OC shipping in your optional details, and we will approve this as "F!Gaston & None" at the end of nominations if it is not changed.

  • Cousins' War - TV Series - the canonical tag for the TV adaptation of the Cousins' War book trilogy appears to be "The White Queen (TV)" - is that not correct?

  • Marvel 616 and X-Men Comicsverse - These were nominated and initially approved separately. Specifically, however, the Maximoffs, Lorna Dane, Jean Grey, and Scott Summers were nominated under 616, who appear to be X-Men, while Victor von Doom was nominated under X-Men, who seems to mainly appear in other parts of the Marvel Comics universe. Can the nominator or nominators shed any light on how these are typically handled?

  • A World of Ice & Fire/Fire & Blood - George R. R. Martin - We can see that this book doesn't have a canonical fandom tag of its own but all the characters in it are canonically subtagged to the ASOIAF books. Is this typically treated by fans as a separate fandom from the ASOIAF books?

We have outstanding queries about Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Dragon Age, Andromeda Six, The Arcana, The Elementalists.
mod63: Rule 63 Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty (Default)

  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses, F!Lysithea von Ordelia/F!Balthus: Is this a typo for M!Lysithea, or did you mean regular Lysithea (which would not need the F!)?

  • Les Miserables - All Media Types: Per the rules, All Media Types is not allowed when it refers to a multitude of adaptations. Please change this to specify, or we will approve as "Les Miserables - Victor Hugo" at the end of nominations.

  • Newsies - All Media Types and The Music Man - All Media Types - While the issue with these is not as pronounced as the Les Mis issue above, please do specify the musical or the film. If these are not specified, we will approve at the end of nominations as "Newsies (1992)" and "The Music Man - Willson."

  • Revolutionary Arc - kitsunerei88 (fic) - This appears to be recursive fanfiction of murkybluematter's Rigel Black fanfiction series, which is already in the tagset. The nominator of that one has made the case for how it is different from its source canon of Harry Potter. Please explain your nomination.

  • Shadow and Bone (TV), F!Jesper Fahey & Any: Per the rules, "Any" is not allowed. If this is not changed by the end of nominations, we will approve it as "F!Jesper Fahey & None" (which is already in the tagset).

We still have some open requests for clarification in post 1: Dragon Age, Andromeda Six, The Arcana, The Elementalists, The Long Ballad.
mod63: Rule 63 Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty (Default)
[personal profile] mod63
  • Customizable protagonists. We are happy to approve these nominations as-is, but we suggest that if you foresee yourself being interested in requesting or offering specific genders, races, or other backgrounds of these protagonists, that you nominate more specific versions of them. If we don't hear back, we will approve as-is.
    • Dragon Age (Video Games) - Female Inquisitor
    • Andromeda Six (Visual Novel) - The Traveler
    • The Arcana (Visual Novel) - The Apprentice
    • The Elementalists (Visual Novel) - Main Character

  • The Long Ballad, Ashile Sun - The canonical tag appears to be Ashina Sun, but does this reflect a difference of name between the manhua and live-action?

Thanks!

Go forth and nominate for Rule 63 Exchange 2021! Nominations will close at 11:59pm EDT on June 16.

The Tag Set is here.

Please see the Rules if you have questions about eligibility and the Evidence Post if there is anything you need to post evidence for.

  • We're going to try being a little more lax this year about allowing nominators to separate out subfandoms for giant fandoms that are often handled separately in other exchanges but that have been collapsed under one heading in previous years of this exchange, such as Star Wars - All Media Types and TOLKIEN J.R.R. - Works. Please respect the spirit of a multifandom exchange and do not plan to sign up with eg. Star Wars Original Trilogy, Star Wars: Rogue One, and Star Wars: Rebels for your three minimum fandoms; mods may ask you to add fandoms in this case.

  • "All Media Types" nominations will be queried for clarification where it is a case of different adaptations (eg. Les Misérables - All Media Types) rather than a case of one continuity existing across several media types and subfandoms.

  • Please use "Crossover Fandom" for crossovers, identifying the source canon of each character in parentheses.

Post here if:

  • You wish to provide evidence that a swap you have nominated or plan to nominate is not an equally prominent or more prominent canon character, per Eligibility§1.
  • You wish to specify that a character is trans because you have nominated or plan to nominate them "swapped to" their canonical gender, per Eligibility§2. (This is not required, but if you are concerned that the mod would not know that the character is trans from a quick search, it may be helpful.)
  • You feel that it may be necessary to justify the eligibility of your nomination for any other reason.
  • You spot an issue in the tagset, such as a typo, an umbrella fandom and a specific fandom both being used, a tag wandering into the wrong fandom, or a crossover located in a fandom other than Crossover Fandom.
  • Any other issue has appeared

A mod will also make a post if any questions or concerns arise during nominations. Thank you!

2021 Rules

mod63: Rule 63 Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty (Default)
[personal profile] mod63
Rule 63 traditionally states that for every fictional character, there exists an opposite-gender counterpart.  Rule 63 Exchange is for creating and receiving fanfiction or fanart in which characters have a different sex or gender than they do in canon.

  • Assignment Rules
  • Nominating Guidelines
  • Sign-Up Guidelines

  • 2021 Schedule/Dates

    Please see the schedule.

    Assignment Rules

    1. The minimum word count for a story is 1000 words.
    2. The minimum fill for an art request is a clean lined drawing of the requested character(s) on unlined paper, or its equivalent in painting/digital form.
    3. Defaulting before the assignment deadline will not be punished. Defaults after the deadline will result in being barred from the next year’s round of the exchange.
    4. Anyone not 63ed in the relationship nomination is assumed to be their canonical self, unless okayed by the requester.
    5. DNWs, or Do Not Wants, will be enforced if they are put in the Optional Details field of your request. DNWs within external links will not be enforced.

    Nominating Guidelines

You may nominate up to 10 fandoms, with 10 relationships in each.
    1. Use “/” for romantic or sexual relationships, “&” for platonic relationships.
    2. You may nominate a solo character by using “& None.” This does not mean that no one else may appear in the story; rather, that you will match on a solo character rather than a relationship.
    3. Every relationship tag must include a minimum of one character who is Rule 63ed. (eg. “Sleeping Beauty/F!Prince,” “F!Harry Potter & F!Ron Weasley & M!Hermione Granger” and “NB!Jonathan Sims & None,” are permitted, “Sleeping Beauty & None” is not permitted.)
    4. Relationships with "Any" or with original characters are not permitted. Please either nominate the specific relationships you are interested in, or nominate the genderswapped character "& None."
    5. Crossovers are permitted. Please nominate them under Crossover Fandom and indicate the fandom of each character, eg. "NB!Dorian Gray (Picture of Dorian Gray)/F!Henry Jekyll (Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde)".
    6. Original Works are not permitted.
    7. RPF is permitted, but people who are under 18 or who aren’t famous in their own right are not permitted.

    Eligibility

    1. Please use common sense and don't nominate canon versions of characters as genderswaps - "M!Natasha Stark" (aka Tony Stark), "F!Garrett Hawke" (aka Marian Hawke), "M!C-3PO", "F!Pearl (Steven Universe)" (two characters where human ideas of sex/gender are less applicable, but who are treated in canon as having a gender), and "F!Haruhi Fujioka" (arguably but not canonically nonbinary) are not eligible tags. F!Tony Stark would remain eligible, since a female Tony is assumed to be a swap of canon Tony rather than a request for the Natasha continuity (just as an F!Loki tag is assumed to be a request/offer for a non-canon scenario, not for the part of canon continuity where Loki is Lady Loki). You can use the evidence post to present evidence that a tag would still be eligible in light of this rule, or leave a comment/email us if you have questions.
    2. As participants have previously expressed interest in, for instance, stories in which a trans character is magically granted their ideal body, trans characters may also be nominated as their canonical gender (eg. "M!Ned Wynert"), not just as a swapped gender. We recognize that this formulation is awkward but we hope that it will allow participants to request and tell the various kinds of stories that interest them.  Since participants are otherwise required to include at least one swapped character in a nominated tag, if you wish to nominate a trans character "swapped to" their canonical gender and are concerned that the mod would not be able to tell that the character is canonically trans from a quick search, we suggest that you comment in the evidence post. The mod will enforce DNWs of characters being written as cis if they are canonically trans.
    3. You may nominate 63ed groups. Please avoid ambiguity - eg. "F!Amis de l'ABC" is a good shorthand for "F!Enjolras & F!Combeferre & F!Courfeyrac & F!Feuilly" etc., and "M!Murdered Wives of Bluebeard & M!Judith" is a way of nominating a group with no distinct personalities, but tags like "M!Everyone" or "F!Slytherin House" are not allowed. If you want to do a full swap of a mixed group, your best bet is probably something like "F!Male Avengers & M!Female Avengers" ("F!Avengers & None" is permitted and would indicate that you want characters like Natasha Romanoff to remain female). To exclude a character or characters from a swap, you might nominate "F!Amis de l'ABC & Enjolras."

    Sign-Up Guidelines

    • You may request 3-10 fandoms.
    • You may offer 3-10 fandoms.
    • You may request or offer the same fandom more than once if there are different freeforms, mediums, and/or ratings that you want to request/offer for different ships. However, you must offer and request a minimum of three unique fandoms.

    Character:
    • This is being used to differentiate between fanfiction and fanart requests. You may request or offer one or both of them.

    Rating Tags:
    • Rating tags show whether you are interested in smut, non-smut, or both. General Audiences does not restrict your writer/artist from using a Teen or Mature rating, only from writing/drawing smut.

    Relationship Tags:
    • Relationship tags match on OR, ie. you may match to anyone offering/requesting any one of the tags you have selected.
    • Recall that “/” refers to a romantic or sexual relationship, “&” to a platonic relationship, and “& None” to a solo character. The latter does not mean that no one else may appear in the story; rather, that you will match on a solo character rather than a relationship.

    Freeforms:
    • Available freeforms are “Always a 63,” “Temporarily a 63,” and “Permanently a 63.” The latter two refer to a change that takes place as part of the plot of the story. You may request/offer one, two, or all three.

    Optional Details:
    • This is the place to include likes, prompts, or anything else that might help your author or artist create something you'll love!
    • Include any DNWs in this field. DNWs that are only in your letter, and not in your signup, will not be enforced. Recall that DNWs must be reasonable and cannot be used to box your writer into writing something specific that they did not match on; eg. even if you would only be happy with noncon, you cannot "DNW consent."

    How Matching Works

    Request 1 by GottaSwapEmAll
Fandom: Harry Potter - J.K. Rowling
    Rating: General Audiences
    Character: Medium: Fanfiction, Medium: Fanart
    Relationships: F!Harry Potter & None, M!Luna Lovegood/Harry Potter, F!Harry Potter/F!Ron Weasley
    Freeform: Always a 63, Permanently 63ed

    Request 2 by GottaSwapEmAll
    Fandom: Yuri!!! on Ice
    Rating: Explicit
    Character: Medium: Fanfiction
    Relationships: F!Katsuki Yuuri/F!Victor Nikiforov
    Freeform: Always a 63

OfferWhiz who offers Harry Potter fanart with Always a 63 and the relationship F!Harry Potter & None can match with this request (whether or not they also offer the other ships or freeforms that GottaSwapEmAll is requesting). They can also choose to fill their assignment by drawing M!Luna/Harry or by writing an explicit story about F!Yuuri/F!Victor, even if they didn't offer those tags - but requester GottaSwapEmAll knows that their matched creator might only be familiar with one of their fandoms or interested in one of their ships.

    Happy requesting/writing/drawing!
