I'd love to see Billy as a slutty metalhead eighties gal who wears tight jeans and too much makeup and terrorizes good preppy boys like Steve. How do her bullying tactics vary from boy Billy's? Does she still want to knock King Steve off his pedestal, or is it more of a sexual conquest? For temporary swap, I can see them either being thrown together by accident or Billy grudgingly going to the one guy he trusts not to make fun of him (and Steve, unlike Billy, strikes me as a giving lover who works hard to give his ladies a good time). I know Billy's characterization was inconsistent, so feel free to put him anywhere on the mean to sympathetic spectrum.

I've read this series three times now, and I love everyone in this barque. All the characters feel like old friends. I love the nailbiting action sequences; the spycraft; the beautiful, beautiful depictions of the sea and of music; the natural philosophy and terrible medical practices; the genuine philosophical differences; the utterly indulgent way O'Brian has of solving problems with near-death injuries (PLATYPUS); the sense of the characters and relationships growing over time while always remaining true to themselves.
Stephen is my favorite. I love the way he thinks, the way he observes and processes the people around him, his tetchiness and reserve, and how much he adores Jack. I also resent him terribly for parts of his relationship with Diana while loving other aspects of it. So tell me: how does that work if Stephen is a woman? How has she pursued her interests in medicine and natural philosophy or become involved in spycraft? What's her history with Irish independence?
The f!Stephen/m!Diana relationship would intrigue me so much. The idea of a Diana unconstrained by society's expectations of women, allowed to pursue whatever career and freedoms he likes, perhaps judged but not ruined by sexual relationships--it's fascinating. Would that make him happier and less cruel? How would his selfishness and generosity manifest? And how would he come to find that unexpected fellow feeling with f!Stephen? (If you go with this pairing, feel free to swap up some of the other characters, too--maybe f!Jack, with or without m!Sophie? Or is it m!Jack in this universe, too?)
For Jack & f!Stephen, this is so interesting! So many of Jack's relationships with women are sexually interested, at least on his side, but then we get some counter-examples in Queenie and Caroline Herschel. How do they become friends? Is there any way they could still travel together and maintain anything like their canonical relationship? Would it ever occur to Sophie to be jealous? Anything with music, or adventures at sea, or featuring both the ways they know and respect each other and the parts of each other's character that cause conflict.

Because of the fact that the main couple spends more than just the last few pages of the book admitting affection for one another, and because of the way Venetia manages to live the life she wants despite everyone's disapproval, this is one of my favorite Heyers--even though I've never been a huge fan of the reformed rake trope.
Make that rake a woman, though, and I'm all in!
The f/f version of this pairing would be so delicious. It puts such an interesting spin on Damerel's terrible reputation and the way she flaunts it in self-defense, and it could change Venetia's determination to be with her into the choice of a more-or-less open lesbian relationship. Also, you know, hot. I'm absolutely down with either rating option for this fic. And regardless of rating, bonus points for clothing porn and competence porn, always.
I'd love to see how the genderswap would change the trajectory of canon, and particularly Venetia's realization that she's found a kindred spirit. Did she know she was into women before meeting Damerel? Or future fic, maybe with traveling on the continent. First time fic for them would be amazing.

I enjoyed their dynamic in the book, but it would work even better for me as f/f.
This is a pairing where I'd particularly love any kind of worldbuilding through art. Some ideas:
- Depictions of the glass mountain and the river running under it
- The grove of white trees
- Staryk clothing, whether for the court or for their nightly rides
- The change of the seasons in Lithvas
- The silver jewelry Miryem has made.
As for the characters--a fierce, beautiful, forbidding Staryk Lady would be wonderful to see! I'd love anything from a scene of their weird, combative courtship; to the negotiations that made up their first marriage; to something showing the hard, everyday work that went into that period of rebuilding after Chernobog was defeated and the respect that grew between them while Miryem waited for winter to come; to their second marriage ceremony, their wedding night, or the life they build after.
Would definitely be up for NSFW art in this fandom. I haven't checked the Explicit box mostly because I'd prefer the art not to focus on exposed genitalia, but anything else is great.

I have watched and rewatched parts of this series an embarrassing number of times. So much of it is perfectly calculated to hit me right in the id. More beautifully-shot and costumed dramas about women’s intellectual passions, please!
In the final episode, we get a brief glimpse of Nona Gaprindashvili, a female Soviet player, and are told she never competed against men. In fact, Gaprindashvili is a real person, and she absolutely did compete against men—she was the first woman to be awarded the Grandmaster title, rather than Woman Grandmaster.
Which is to say it’s possible for a female version of Borgov to have played chess at the highest levels, though her career would probably have looked very different. I would love to see this explored! How would it change Beth’s perspective on her? Beth is so reluctant to accept solidarity and support and see people as colleagues—coming from the male-dominated world of US Chess, would she be drawn to Borgova or see her as even more of a threat?
Would love rivalry turning to collegiality (or something warmer), epistolary/correspondence fic (perhaps through chess articles?) or found media, or political maneuvering to which Beth may or may not pay any attention.
If you have any interest in the social and political history of chess during the Cold War, Cold War history in general, or the more technical aspects of chess, please let your geek flag fly. I will be there with bells on.
For art in this fandom, I’d love the sort of focus on clothing and setting that we got in the series (the shots of the hotels were amazing, I loved so many of Beth’s styles, and then you get beautifully-lit scenes like that one in the basement in the final episode, with Beth in black under stark lighting, lit up like a Caravaggio). Alternatively, chess motifs! All the chess motifs, or interesting chess sets, or depictions of gameplay.

On Beth’s end, I honestly can’t see her as monogamous! I’m fine with any of her canon relationships or casual non canonical encounters, and I also like Beth/Jolene.

I've read this series three times now, and I love everyone in this barque. All the characters feel like old friends. I love the nailbiting action sequences; the spycraft; the beautiful, beautiful depictions of the sea and of music; the natural philosophy and terrible medical practices; the genuine philosophical differences; the utterly indulgent way O'Brian has of solving problems with near-death injuries (PLATYPUS); the sense of the characters and relationships growing over time while always remaining true to themselves.
Stephen is my favorite. I love the way he thinks, the way he observes and processes the people around him, his tetchiness and reserve, and how much he adores Jack. I also resent him terribly for parts of his relationship with Diana while loving other aspects of it. So tell me: how does that work if Stephen is a woman? How has she pursued her interests in medicine and natural philosophy or become involved in spycraft? What's her history with Irish independence?
The f!Stephen/m!Diana relationship would intrigue me so much. The idea of a Diana unconstrained by society's expectations of women, allowed to pursue whatever career and freedoms he likes, perhaps judged but not ruined by sexual relationships--it's fascinating. Would that make him happier and less cruel? How would his selfishness and generosity manifest? And how would he come to find that unexpected fellow feeling with f!Stephen? (If you go with this pairing, feel free to swap up some of the other characters, too--maybe f!Jack, with or without m!Sophie? Or is it m!Jack in this universe, too?)
For Jack & f!Stephen, this is so interesting! So many of Jack's relationships with women are sexually interested, at least on his side, but then we get some counter-examples in Queenie and Caroline Herschel. How do they become friends? Is there any way they could still travel together and maintain anything like their canonical relationship? Would it ever occur to Sophie to be jealous? Anything with music, or adventures at sea, or featuring both the ways they know and respect each other and the parts of each other's character that cause conflict.

Because of the fact that the main couple spends more than just the last few pages of the book admitting affection for one another, and because of the way Venetia manages to live the life she wants despite everyone's disapproval, this is one of my favorite Heyers--even though I've never been a huge fan of the reformed rake trope.
Make that rake a woman, though, and I'm all in!
The f/f version of this pairing would be so delicious. It puts such an interesting spin on Damerel's terrible reputation and the way she flaunts it in self-defense, and it could change Venetia's determination to be with her into the choice of a more-or-less open lesbian relationship. Also, you know, hot. I'm absolutely down with either rating option for this fic. And regardless of rating, bonus points for clothing porn and competence porn, always.
I'd love to see how the genderswap would change the trajectory of canon, and particularly Venetia's realization that she's found a kindred spirit. Did she know she was into women before meeting Damerel? Or future fic, maybe with traveling on the continent. First time fic for them would be amazing.

This is a pairing where I'd particularly love any kind of worldbuilding through art. Some ideas:
- Depictions of the glass mountain and the river running under it
- The grove of white trees
- Staryk clothing, whether for the court or for their nightly rides
- The change of the seasons in Lithvas
- The silver jewelry Miryem has made.
As for the characters--a fierce, beautiful, forbidding Staryk Lady would be wonderful to see! I'd love anything from a scene of their weird, combative courtship; to the negotiations that made up their first marriage; to something showing the hard, everyday work that went into that period of rebuilding after Chernobog was defeated and the respect that grew between them while Miryem waited for winter to come; to their second marriage ceremony, their wedding night, or the life they build after.

I have watched and rewatched parts of this series an embarrassing number of times. So much of it is perfectly calculated to hit me right in the id. More beautifully-shot and costumed dramas about women’s intellectual passions, please!
In the final episode, we get a brief glimpse of Nona Gaprindashvili, a female Soviet player, and are told she never competed against men. In fact, Gaprindashvili is a real person, and she absolutely did compete against men—she was the first woman to be awarded the Grandmaster title, rather than Woman Grandmaster.
Which is to say it’s possible for a female version of Borgov to have played chess at the highest levels, though her career would probably have looked very different. I would love to see this explored! How would it change Beth’s perspective on her? Beth is so reluctant to accept solidarity and support and see people as colleagues—coming from the male-dominated world of US Chess, would she be drawn to Borgova or see her as even more of a threat?
Would love rivalry turning to collegiality (or something warmer), epistolary/correspondence fic (perhaps through chess articles?) or found media, or political maneuvering to which Beth may or may not pay any attention.
If you have any interest in the social and political history of chess during the Cold War, Cold War history in general, or the more technical aspects of chess, please let your geek flag fly. I will be there with bells on.
For art in this fandom, I’d love the sort of focus on clothing and setting that we got in the series (the shots of the hotels were amazing, I loved so many of Beth’s styles, and then you get beautifully-lit scenes like that one in the basement in the final episode, with Beth in black under stark lighting, lit up like a Caravaggio). Alternatively, chess motifs! All the chess motifs, or interesting chess sets, or depictions of gameplay.
