Nomination of Howl's Moving Castle, we won't accept an All Media Types nomination for this fandom, please specify the book or the film.

Nominator of six Kamen Rider subfandoms, these appear to exist in continuity with one another, with some of the characters nominated for one title making appearances in others. We can approve them separately rather than subsuming them under AMT or Heisei (or Reiwa) era as we've done in the past, but per our longstanding rule, we will not count them separately towards the mandatory 3 minimum fandoms to offer/request, and you will have to offer and request some non-Kamen-Rider fandoms to participate in the multifandom exchange. Please let us know how you'd like to proceed.

Nominators of Naruto and Pokemon, please check your unapproved nominations and make sure that only characters who are genderswapped are marked with a gender.

Nominator of 100 Girlfriends, we have approved nominations with "Rentarou Family" because there seems to be a shared understanding in the fandom of who is referred to by that term, but please have realistic expectations about how many characters you can expect to appear in fic or art written for this tag; if you are dead set on seeing specific people, you might want to nominate them.

Nominator of The Lighthouse, we're sorry for the confusion with our previous query, but since the fandom seems to typically call that character Ephraim Winslow we've approved the tag as Ephraim Winslow.

Nominator of Love & Legends, we can accept your nomination as-is but please be aware that we won't permit recipients to request or DNW a specific gender of main character if the tag just says Main Character.

Nominators of Dragon Age, similarly, we can accept your Warden nominations but if you want a particular Warden backstory please bake it into the tag. There's also a "M!Alistair/Morrigan" nomination that needs to be fixed.

Nominators of All Elite Wrestling and Ring of Honor, we approved the latter but then noticed that Bryan Danielson was nominated in both, and on looking up the fandoms, it seems like ROH got sold to AEW and most of the other wrestlers nominated under ROH also wrestle(d) for AEW. Mods have very little grasp of how continuity works in wrestling; are these separate fandoms or one fandom?

Nominators of Percy Jackson, in a previous year we approved all Percy Jackson bookverse tags under "Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan" even though that tag technically doesn't encompass Heroes of Olympus/Trials of Apollo, because the "All Media Types" metatag that encompasses all of those books also encompasses the films, TV, and musical. Is this acceptable, or would you prefer a tag that is non-canonical but clear like Percy Jackson Bookverse?

Nominators of Buffy and Mass Effect Trilogy, do you have feelings/opinions about us approving the noms as-is or approving them as "Buffyverse" and/or "Mass Effect (Video Games)" to catch potential nominations of Angel and Andromeda under the same fandom?

Nominator of The Lighthouse, we wanted to double check that you meant Thomas Howard, as in the character played by Robert Pattinson and now going by Ephraim Winslow, paired with the original Ephraim Winslow in the backstory? Or did you want Pattinson's character as Winslow paired with Thomas Wake, Willem Dafoe's character?
Nominator of Merlin, is "Knights" shorthand for a group of specific individuals? Could a recipient and a writer/artist for this fandom expect to be on the same page about who is being referred to by this tag? (It would also be great if you could disambiguate your nominations by putting "Merlin" in parentheses after each one.)
Nominators of Dimension 20, Miraculous Ladybug and Chrestomanci, it seems like some of these characters have alternate canonical names that are piped in their AO3 tags. But, sometimes AO3 is dumb about this and pipes a tag for a name that no one in the fandom really uses for them; will your tags as nominated be clear to other members of the fandom?

Nominator of Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms, we will not accept this nomination. Please choose a specific Holmes canon. The original Doyle stories are already in the tagset.
Nominator of Fire Emblem Three Houses, do you have a preferred Byleth gender? We can accept your nomination as is, but we will not permit recipients to request/DNW a specific Byleth gender if the tag just says Byleth.
Nominator(s) of Stargate, we combined Atlantis and SG-1 last year to avoid having to treat characters from the same overall continuity as a crossover ship. Is that acceptable this year, or would you prefer to keep them separate, Star Wars style? Approved both fandoms as Stargate - All Media Types per our rule about AMT being allowable for single continuities covering multiple titles or media.
Nominator of Crossover Fandom, we're assuming that you mean the Shelley novel Frankenstein and the Stoker novel Dracula, not any adaptations, and will approve with this disambiguation unless you let us know otherwise.

Evidence Post 2024

Post here if:

You wish to provide evidence that a swap you have nominated or plan to nominate is not an equally prominent or more prominent canon character, per Eligibility§1.
You wish to specify that a character is trans because you have nominated or plan to nominate them "swapped to" their canonical gender, per Eligibility§2. (This is not required, but if you are concerned that the mod would not know that the character is trans from a quick search, it may be helpful.)
You feel that it may be necessary to justify the eligibility of your nomination for any other reason.
You spot an issue in the tagset, such as a typo, an umbrella fandom and a specific fandom both being used, a tag wandering into the wrong fandom, or a crossover located in a fandom other than Crossover Fandom.
Any other issue has appeared

2024 Schedule/Dates

Assignment Rules

The minimum word count for a story is 1000 words.
The minimum fill for an art request is a clean lined drawing of the requested character(s) on unlined paper, or its equivalent in painting/digital form.
Defaulting before the assignment deadline will not be punished. Defaults after the deadline will result in being barred from the next year’s round of the exchange.
Anyone not 63ed in the relationship nomination is assumed to be their canonical self, unless okayed by the requester.
DNWs, or Do Not Wants, will be enforced if they are put in the Optional Details field of your request. DNWs located only in letters/external links will not be enforced.

Nominating Guidelines

Use “/” for romantic or sexual relationships, “&” for platonic relationships.
You may nominate a solo character by using “& None.” This does not mean that no one else may appear in the story; rather, that you will match on a solo character rather than a relationship.
Every relationship tag must include a minimum of one character who is Rule 63ed. (eg. “Sleeping Beauty/F!Prince,” “F!Harry Potter & F!Ron Weasley & M!Hermione Granger” and “NB!Jonathan Sims & None,” are permitted, “Sleeping Beauty & None” is not permitted.)
If your character or ship appears in multiple continuities/fandoms, it is really helpful to the mod approving nominations if you add parenthetical disambiguation.
Relationships with "Any" or with original characters are not permitted. Please either nominate the specific relationships you are interested in, or nominate the genderswapped character "& None."
Crossovers are permitted. Please nominate them under Crossover Fandom and indicate the fandom of each character, eg. "NB!Dorian Gray (Picture of Dorian Gray)/F!Henry Jekyll (Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde)".
Original Works are not permitted.
RPF is permitted, but people who are under 18 or who aren’t famous in their own right are not permitted.

Eligibility

Please use common sense and don't nominate canon versions of characters as genderswaps - "M!Natasha Stark" (aka Tony Stark), "F!Garrett Hawke" (aka Marian Hawke), "M!C-3PO", "F!Pearl (Steven Universe)" (two characters where human ideas of sex/gender are less applicable, but who are treated in canon as having a gender), and "F!Haruhi Fujioka" (arguably but not canonically nonbinary) are not eligible tags. F!Tony Stark would remain eligible, since a female Tony is assumed to be a swap of canon Tony rather than a request for the Natasha continuity (just as an F!Loki tag is assumed to be a request/offer for a non-canon scenario, not for the part of canon continuity where Loki is Lady Loki). You can use the evidence post to present evidence that a tag would still be eligible in light of this rule, or leave a comment/email us if you have questions.
As participants have previously expressed interest in, for instance, stories in which a trans character is magically granted their ideal body, trans characters may also be nominated as their canonical gender (eg. "M!Ned Wynert"), not just as a swapped gender. We recognize that this formulation is awkward but we hope that it will allow participants to request and tell the various kinds of stories that interest them. Since participants are otherwise required to include at least one swapped character in a nominated tag, if you wish to nominate a trans character "swapped to" their canonical gender and are concerned that the mod would not be able to tell that the character is canonically trans from a quick search, we suggest that you comment in the evidence post. The mod will enforce DNWs of characters being written as cis if they are canonically trans.
You may nominate 63ed groups. Please avoid ambiguity - eg. "F!Amis de l'ABC" is a good shorthand for "F!Enjolras & F!Combeferre & F!Courfeyrac & F!Feuilly" etc., and "M!Murdered Wives of Bluebeard & M!Judith" is a way of nominating a group with no distinct personalities, but tags like "M!Everyone" or "F!Slytherin House" are not allowed. If you want to do a full swap of a mixed group, your best bet is probably something like "F!Male Avengers & M!Female Avengers" ("F!Avengers & None" is permitted and would indicate that you want characters like Natasha Romanoff to remain female). To exclude a character or characters from a swap, you might nominate "F!Amis de l'ABC & Enjolras."

Dividing fandoms

You may separate out commonly used subdivisions of giant continuities in this exchange as in other exchanges, eg. Star Wars Original Trilogy/Star Wars Sequel Trilogy (instead of All Media Types) or Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion (instead of TOLKIEN J.R.R. - Works), which would otherwise be unwieldy. Please plan to respect the spirit of a multifandom exchange and do not sign up with three different Star Wars installments for your three minimum fandoms; mods may ask you to add fandoms in this case. If you wish to nominate a relationship between characters from one of these sprawling continuities who don't meet in any installment, you may nominate them under "Star Wars Crossovers", "Tolkien Crossovers" etc. rather than in the general "Crossover Fandom."
"All Media Types" nominations will be queried for clarification where it is a case of different adaptations (eg. Les Misérables - All Media Types) rather than a case of one continuity existing across several media types and subfandoms.
We will not accept nominations of eg. "Disney" or "Shakespeare" as a single continuity; if you want to offer or request a crossover between multiple works from the same author or company, please nominate it under Crossover Fandom.

Sign-Up Guidelines

You may request 3-10 fandoms.
You may offer 3-10 fandoms.
You may request or offer the same fandom more than once if there are different freeforms, mediums, and/or ratings that you want to request/offer for different ships. However, you must offer and request a minimum of three unique fandoms.

This is being used to differentiate between fanfiction and fanart requests. You may request or offer one or both of them.

Rating tags show whether you are interested in smut, non-smut, or both. General Audiences does not restrict your writer/artist from using a Teen or Mature rating, only from writing/drawing smut.

Relationship tags match on OR, ie. you may match to anyone offering/requesting any one of the tags you have selected.
Recall that “/” refers to a romantic or sexual relationship, “&” to a platonic relationship, and “& None” to a solo character. The latter does not mean that no one else may appear in the story; rather, that you will match on a solo character rather than a relationship.

Available freeforms are “Always a 63,” “Temporarily a 63,” and “Permanently a 63.” The latter two refer to a change that takes place as part of the plot of the story. You may request/offer one, two, or all three.

This is the place to include likes, prompts, or anything else that might help your author or artist create something you'll love!
Include any DNWs in this field. DNWs that are only in your letter, and not in your signup, will not be enforced. Recall that DNWs must be reasonable and cannot be used to box your writer into writing something specific that they did not match on; eg. even if you would only be happy with noncon, you cannot "DNW consent."

It is possible to match on any combination of ship, medium, rating, and freeform tag that occurs within a single request. If you have some ships in a fandom for which you do not want to draw smut and others for which you do, or some ships in a fandom you only want to read as Always a 63 and some that you only want to read as Temporarily a 63, it is a good idea to make multiple requests/offers for the same fandom.

Answers to other FAQ

You can create for a request that is different from the one you matched on if something else strikes your fancy. As a requester, however, do not assume that your assigned creator is familiar with your other fandoms.

You may request characters who are trans versions of the gender they are being swapped to, eg. requesting "F!Sherlock Holmes" as a trans woman. "Permanently a 63" may be an appropriate freeform to use if you are specifically interested in the story exploring the character's transition, since this tag refers to the change taking place within the story. Otherwise, "Always a 63" may be an appropriate freeform for a story where the character identifies/lives as the requested gender. It is not possible to match on this theme specifically or to ensure that you receive it/are able to write it.

It's not necessary for the change back to the character's original gender to occur onscreen within the timeframe of the story, in a story matching on Temporarily a 63, as long as the assumption is that it will be reversible.

Rule 63 traditionally states that for every fictional character, there exists an opposite-gender counterpart. Rule 63 Exchange is for creating and receiving fanfiction or fanart in which characters have a different sex or gender than they do in canon.
